Soulsville charter school has a new executive director

“Our students need (and deserve) instructors who will stay, at least through to the end of the school year, but that has become a greater challenge now more than ever for some."

Maya Robinson, a dedicated educator and native of North Memphis, has been an important part of The Soulsville Charter School (TSCS) for 13 years. Her journey at TSCS began as a 9th Grade ELA teacher and has seen her rise to become the school's Executive Director.

One of the biggest challenges Maya faces is the recruitment and retention of strong classroom leaders, which is one of the main focuses of Teach901 .

Maya’s connection with Teach901 has played a significant role in her professional journey. "Teach901 has been a great partner of TSCS over the past years. We primarily partner with Teach901 for teacher recruitment," she explains. "The invaluable partnerships and connections have had the most tremendous impact on keeping me connected with the other charter schools and leaders as well as keeping me abreast of what is going on in education in Memphis."

The importance of education

Maya believes in the power of education and the impact it can have on students' lives. "Honestly, I truly believe that education chose me. I honestly believe that education is a calling, and I remain in the work because I have been called to do so. I value the work I do alongside my colleagues, students, and families, and that keeps me grounded in the work I do each day," she says.

Her hopes for her students are equally inspiring. "My greatest hope for my students is that, by the time they meet high school graduation day, they are met with a choice of options, not limitations. Therefore, no matter what post secondary pathway a student chooses, they are empowered because it is their choice and not their obligation.”
