Meet Arin Johnson, 2026 shainberg scholar

The Shainberg Scholarship honors the legacy of Herbert Shainberg, a Memphis businessman known for his philanthropy and his belief in the power of kindness. His grandchildren carry that legacy forward by funding scholarships for students in the Choose901 Alumni network who have significant financial gaps, whether they're headed to a four year college or an alternative path like trade school or a certificate program. Recipients are known as Shainberg Scholars.

This year, we're introducing you to the students behind that title. Next up is Arin Johnson.

  • College: Belmont University

  • Major: Legal Studies, pre-law track

Where It Started

Arin grew up in Bartlett, just outside Memphis, before landing at Soulsville Charter School.

"My experience was definitely different, especially when meeting different people and understanding different walks of life. Ultimately, I believe this experience shaped me on how to better understand not only myself but also the individuals around me as well."

Building Toward the Law

Now a freshman at Belmont University, Arin already has a clear sense of where his major is taking her.

"I'm a legal studies major on a pre-law track, and what led me to this major was the understanding of agreeing to disagree and how to professionally express difference in ideals. I hope to be a lobbyist or practicing attorney in the future, fighting for the betterment of not only myself but also those around me."

He's already moving on that plan, enrolling in Belmont's accelerated law track and building relationships in the field.

"I am participating in the 3+3 accelerated law program at Belmont University, as well as connecting with other individuals within the legal space."

What Winning the Scholarship Means

For Arin, the scholarship is bigger than tuition. It's a chance to represent his city.

"Winning the scholarship is an amazing opportunity for me to grow and show other individuals what Memphis has to offer as well as blessing me with the opportunity to attend university debt-free."

He also points to the mentorship that's come through the alumni network.

"The alumni program has worked to connect me with several mentors who have experience in leadership within my field."

Why He Loves Memphis

Ask Arin what keeps him tied to home, and it comes back to the people.

"I love the sense of community that we have built as a city and those who understand that if you love Memphis, Memphis will love you back. I hope to be a part of the next generation of successful individuals who can build within the city of Memphis and Tennessee as a whole."

Giving Back

"Giving back to Memphis in my eyes is doing what's best to improve our city and sharing the knowledge that I have gained to the next generation."

His advice to the students coming up behind him:

"Don't let anyone stop you from following your dreams, create your plan, build goals, and don't share until you've achieved them."
