Meet Morgan Burns, 2026 Shainberg Scholar
The Shainberg Scholarship honors the legacy of Herbert Shainberg, a Memphis businessman known for his philanthropy and his belief in the power of kindness. His grandchildren carry that legacy forward by funding scholarships for students in the Choose901 Alumni network who have significant financial gaps, whether they're headed to a four year college or an alternative path like trade school or a certificate program. Recipients are known as Shainberg Scholars.
This year, we're introducing you to the students behind that title. Next up is Morgan Burns.
Morgan Burns
Alumni School: New Hope Christian Academy
College: Middle Tennessee State University
Major: Business, with her sights set on building a fashion business
Where It Started
Morgan grew up in Frayser, and New Hope Christian Academy shaped more than just her academics.
"While attending, I was one of the shyest people there was. Over time, I gained a sense of confidence and maturity. New Hope instilled positivity, gratitude, grace, honesty, and relationships that I still maintain. Because of that, I am forever grateful and will always cherish my experience."
Building a Fashion Business
Morgan is a senior at Middle Tennessee State University, graduating in spring 2027, and her business degree is really a means to a much more specific end.
"I chose a business major for a clearer understanding and path to creating my own fashion business. I am interested in a career in fashion because it's what I thoroughly enjoy and thrive in."
She's already building toward it in her own community. Right now, she's starting a sewing social club open to all skill levels, and it's not the first time fashion has connected her to something bigger.
"Choose901 Alumni has supported me in unfathomable ways, from getting me connected to shadow the Director of Memphis Fashion Week in 2017 to helping me build my resume and prep for interviews. I am so thankful for the continuous support!"
What the Scholarship Means
For Morgan, the scholarship is what lets her focus on the work itself instead of how to afford it.
"Winning the Shainberg Scholarship means that I have another opportunity to pursue success. It's creating an opportunity for me to focus on the work without having to focus on the financial aspect. This scholarship impacts my life and pursuit of higher education, allowing me to overcome adversities and surpass my own expectations. It is allowing me to remain open-minded as the opportunities are endless."
Beyond the Classroom
Outside of school and sewing, Morgan keeps it simple.
"I love to host, nap, and watch a black-and-white movie or show."
When she's home, she's usually at Overton Park or the Brooks Museum, and she'll always make room for Las Delicias or Dixie Queen.
Giving Back
"'Giving back to Memphis' to me means elevation and support. It means showing up and being present and doing that to the best of my ability."
Her advice to the students coming up behind her:
"My advice is to shoot for the stars! The world is your oyster, and you are the pearl. The opportunities are endless because you exist! Do not limit yourself - create the opportunities; you do not have to wait for them. Don't be afraid to try and don't be afraid to ask."
