Catching up with 2024 winner Katherine Pointer

University of Memphis student Katherine Pointer was awarded one of the Woodyard Realty Scholarships in 2024. With scholarship funds, Pointer is continuing her University education and focusing on biology. One of her lifelong goals is to heal Memphis through medicine. More recently, she is exploring Dosimetry (radiation oncology), and hopes to one day get her Masters degree in the field. 

One year later—how are you doing?

“I have been amazing. I started off the year going to Athens, Greece for a semester abroad.”

How has receiving the Woodyard Realty Scholarship helped you over this past year—academically, financially, or personally?

“I was able to primarily focus on my academic coursework and remain in good standing due to the financial burden of paying for school being relieved for me. I was also able to financially support the cost for my study abroad program. Receiving this scholarship has also given me not only the courage and determination to never give up and go after what I want in life, but it also provided me the confidence to truly believe that I am more than capable of doing and accomplishing anything I set my mind to.”

What’s next on your horizon—any new goals, changes in direction, or exciting opportunities ahead?

“I just came back from completing my study abroad program spending my spring semester in Athens, Greece, so I’m not really sure right now. I just plan on taking a few summer courses and finding a part-time job to work. In the future after graduation, I will more than likely take a gap year to gain more hands-on experience, shadow a medical dosimetrist, and maybe try to get a few certifications before I decide to pursue a Master’s Degree in Medical Dosimetry.”
