one year later- Mallory Martin on winning the woodyard scholarship

Catching up with 2024 Winner Mallory martin

Last year, Mallory Martin won $5,000 from the Woodyard Realty scholarship, which went towards earning her bachelor’s in engineering at the University of Memphis. The scholarship provided security to pursue her education and fueled her growing dream of community impact through civil welfare. She’s actively involved in an internship with Kroger, where she is working with the Facility Engineering Department. She will be graduating from U of M this coming school year!

One year later- how are you doing?

I've been great! My junior year at the University of Memphis was challenging but ended well and taught me a lot about time management and my interest areas within the field of civil engineering. I was elected as Vice President of my sorority and it's been exciting to serve in that regard. In May, I had the opportunity to study abroad with the university, and I went to France, where I learned a lot about other cultures and myself. I have continued working throughout the school year at my internship, and am still learning a lot! Overall, this past year has been busy, but fulfilling!”

How has receiving the Woodyard Realty Scholarship helped you over this past year?

“The Woodyard Realty Scholarship has been such a blessing over the past year! Not only has receiving this scholarship given me financial peace-of-mind in pursuit of my degree, but it's also granted me the opportunity to freely explore my interests within engineering. Being recognized in this way has also granted me personal confidence and I am so grateful to the Woodyard Realty team for this award.”

You talked about community being key to your success. How has your community grown or changed in Memphis this year?

“College is funny because every 3 months your schedule completely changes, which often means your community changes! I'm fortunate to have a consistent community through my church, my friends from school, my sorority, my roommates, and my Bible study group! I was just talking to a friend about how unique Memphis is in terms of community: I went to a concert in Southaven last week and saw at least a dozen people I knew from different circles in my life. People always say that for such a big city, Memphis is a lot like a small town, and it's so true! I love being in a city that's so easy to integrate into. I can usually find someone I know randomly throughout my week because the community is everywhere in Memphis!”
